The Unicorn Song (Revised)

A song was once penned by Shel Silverstein
Had a rockin' rhythm, had a rockin' rhyme
And the words today could not be more relevant
I'm talking of the song 'bout cats and rats and elephants

It begins "A long time ago when the earth was green
There were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen"
He talks up these beasts, well it's not a big ask
I cannot imagine how they could be surpassed

There were long-necked geese and camels humpty backed
I'd like to add echidnas and the gecko crested black
Rainbow lorikeets, bandicoots and duck billed platypi
Every one a treasure and far too beautiful to die

Some like to swim, some like to swing
Some glide, some slide and others love to sing
If we tear down their house without any thought
We'll be too late to stop the disaster we have wrought

Now this song was inspired by the mythical unicorn
When the ark sailed away it was left behind forlorn
We could be left all alone and broken hearted
Because our magical fauna  had all departed

(Sydney, Australia - 2009)
