Instincts

We are born with instincts which keep us alive
These instincts we have are what help us survive
If we feel cold we'll sit by the fire
If our mouth's dry and parched, water's what we desire

If we start yawning then we'll toddle off to bed
If our stomach start's rumbling we'll try to get fed
If the sun beats down fiercely, then we'll hunt for some shade
These instincts we have are with what we are made

But what if we had an instinct which was instinctively wrong
We had an instinct which did not help us along
An instinct that told us the wrong thing to do
An instinct which gave us a mistaken cue

We followed this instinct by night and by day
Although it turned our skin a tinge of yellowy grey
We smoked packet after packet after packet after packet
Although from our lungs emerged a cacophonous racket
